Steve Katai from Cleveland, OH, was chosen out of 3000 entrants as the winner of the 2003 Degree "Everyman Ironman" contest where the makers of Degree antiperspirant searched for one "everyday" person with the passion and drive to become an Ironman triathlete. Prior to winning the contest, Katai, a technology project manager, did not own a bike, and had little to no triathlon training background. That all changed when Katai was moved to Encinitas, CA in June 2003 where he trained with eight-time Ironman World Champion, Paula Newby- Fraser and other experts from Multiports.com to turn from an "Everyman" into an "Ironman."

Katai showed the world that an ordinary person could achieve extraordinary results when he successfully finished the 2003 Ironman Florida race in less than 13 hours. He went from zero to Ironman in 5 months!

Katai was also involved as the program continued in 2004. He served as a judge, spokesperson, and mentor for the two new winners. He again competed in the Ironman Florida and shaved almost an hour and a half off his time from the prior year.

Colin Barr, one of the 04 winners, and Katai teamed up in 2005 and wrote a triathlon book proposal for The Complete Idiot's Guide series. Alpha Books loved the idea and contracted with them on this project. The release date is April 2007. See home page for a link to purchase the book.
